Sarah Van de Laar, a City Letter Carrier out of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, received the Combination NALC and USPS Hero Award at a ceremony on July 1, 2025.
On May 28, 2025, Sarah witness a vehicle drive into the yard while on her route. Sarah rushed over to the to check on the status of the driver, Robert Simon. While Sarah was on the phone with Emergency Services, Mr. Simon slumped back into the driver’s seat and became unresponsive. Sarah then waved over another bystander to help get Mr. Simon out of the car. Once Mr. Simon was out of the car, Sarah proceeded to perform chest compressions as instructed by the 911 Operator until an ambulance arrived. Once the medics took over, they were successfully able to revive Mr. Simon and take him to the hospital, where he recovered. There is no doubt that Sarah’s quick thinking & action saved Mr. Simon’s life
“I was at the right place at the right time. I’m glad I was able to help him.” Sarah said, retelling the story to Branch President Sean Geackel.

This is what Mail Carriers do everyday across our nation, City, Rural, Postal employees in general. The USPS employee is always willing to go the extra mile to deliver, assist and just plain be that trusted federal worker. The USPS employees went right thru COVID, winter storms and any obstacle to perform their duty for the American people. This is another story of a sister or brother mail carrier stepping up to take care of her community. I am proud to be a brother Buxmont 920 member of this young lady, and I congratulate Sarah on her quick actions on that day. Sarah you have made us all proud to be not only postal employees but also to be members of our Buxmont 920 NALC Union. THANK YOU
